SAKAN Partners: CHINA

China FlagChina holds numerous global records, ranging from the most populous country on earth, through the fastest growing economy over the last 30 years, and the highest population of Internet users. China is Africa’s leading trade partner, with archaeological evidence suggesting that such trade may have begun as early as the Chinese HAN Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD), with strong archaeological evidence found in the Great Zimbabwe and Mapungubwe Kingdoms, of trade with China during the +1100AD period, which extended into today’s 21st century South Africa. China is rapidly becoming a global technology leader, with high technology companies in the ICT sector active in nearly all the world’s countries. South Africa hosts several major Chinese hi-tech multinationals in the ICT sector such as Huawei and ZTE, which could be of value in sharing information and knowledge with South Africa about the prolific use of Internet Cafés to drive China’s early digital literacy growth, and the current changes in the light of ubiquitous terminal ownership and growing Internet connectivity. China's high-level participation in the development of the technological components of the Forth Industrial Revolution, specifically the 5G mobile and IoT standards and networks, positions China as a potentially valuable partner for SAKAN - these modern communications technologies may be central to the fight against inequality, poverty and unemployment.

This page will be developed further as the SAKAN search for productive partnerships between China and South Africa progresses. The platform provided by the BRICS community is an invaluable institutional starting point for the SAKAN partnership search. The China section of the slider below suggests what China and South Africa can do together within this SAKAN partnership.
